University of Michigan OGC Attorney Gloria Hage: “No Matters Involving Nick Will Be Investigated” — Dr. Myria Petrou’s Request for Renewed Investigation, Concealed 2018 Inquiry, and Bylaw 5.09 Proceedings (March 22, 2023)
On March 22, 2023, University of Michigan Office of General Counsel (OGC) attorney Gloria Hage informed Drs. Myria Petrou and Bradley Foerster that no University official would investigate matters involving "Nick." Her statement followed Dr. Petrou's request to the University of Michigan Police Department Oversight Committee for a renewed investigation into the unidentified witness whose sexual and criminal allegations had been used by the Ann Arbor Police Department to justify continuing its criminal investigation of the couple.
The University conducted an unsuccessful investigation into "Nick's" identity years earlier but concealed that investigation from Drs. Myria Petrou and Bradley Foerster.
The University's OGC reviewed recordings, correspondence, and possible identities in an effort to identify "Nick." The Office for Institutional Equity (OIE) also made 18 attempts to obtain Dr. Paul Cronin's participation, without securing an interview.
The October 1, 2018 OIE memorandum documented those efforts. It was dated the day after Dr. Petrou's resignation became effective on September 30, 2018. The memorandum was first introduced during Dr. Foerster's November 2018 Bylaw 5.09 hearings after Dr. Foerster told the Ad Hoc Hearing Committee that no one had investigated "Nick."
The November 17, 2018 hearing record establishes another connection. OGC attorney Gloria Hage was present when Dr. Petrou's account of her reported sexual assault was presented and discussed before the Ad Hoc Hearing Committee. Committee members questioned Dr. Foerster about statements attributed to Dr. Cronin and the circumstances surrounding Dr. Petrou's February 2017 miscarriage.
More than four years later, Dr. Petrou sought renewed review through the University of Michigan Police Department Oversight Committee. The committee acknowledged her complaint and referred her to OGC attorney Gloria Hage.
On March 22, 2023, OGC attorney Gloria Hage responded:
“No matters involving Nick will be investigated by me or by any other officials at the University. There will be no further response on this matter.”
